What Your Fifth Grader Will Learn This Year

Fifth grade students will learn the following concepts and ideas by the end of the school year:

Reading

  • Read grade level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression
  • Use multiple strategies to develop grade appropriate vocabulary
  • Explain the purpose of text to establish a purpose for reading
  • Determine the main idea and details in grade level text through inferring and summarizing
  • Identify cause and effect relationships along with using prior knowledge to make predictions
  • Compare and contrast elements in multiple texts
  • Identify themes or topics in a variety of nonfiction and fiction text
  • Use comprehension strategies integrated with graphic organizers to fully understand text

Social Studies

  • The students will discuss American History time periods, Pre-Columbian North American History (Aztec/Mayas, Native American cultural aspects), Exploration and Settlement of North America (European Explorers), Colonization of North America (New England and thirteen colonies), American Revolution, and Geography (regions and places).

Writing

  • Students prepare for the writing portion of the FSA as they learn how to write multi-paragraph evidence-based expository and opinion essays .

Math

  • Develop an understanding of dividing whole numbers (multi-digit numbers) along with using real-world problems.
  • Understand addition and subtraction of fractions with like/unlike denominators with rounding and determining the prime factorization of numbers; relate prime and composite numbers, factors, and multiples within the context of fractions
  • Describe three-dimensional shapes and analyze their properties, including volume and surface area and data analysis (analyze line and double bar, and pictographs)
  • Use the properties of equality to solve numerical and real world situations
  • Using geometry and measurement (identify and plot ordered pairs, find area of plane figures)

Science

  • Understanding of scientific knowledge (scientific investigation vs. experiment). Determine descriptions based on fact or personal belief.
  • Earth in Space and Time (Gravity, energy, galaxies, stars, the Solar System – planets)
  • The water cycle and the properties of water in changing conditions
  • Properties of Matter (mass, basic properties, mixtures); explore the physical and chemical changes of matter.
  • Forms of Energy (heat, light, sound, electrical, and mechanical)
  • Organization and Development of Living Organisms (Identify organs in the human body, compare and contrast the functions of organs and other physical structures)
